There are some guarantees in life; the sun will rise in the morning, taxes are due during garden and junkin season when I need my money more than the IRS does, and I will lose my mind during the holidays. Why? My Mama is coming! I will clean things that don’t need cleaning, and I will clean things that she will never see, I will clean the green cleaning supply containers. But, it’s all good, because my Mama leaves thinking I have it all together, and I like to bask in her delusions.
OMG! The Carpets
I wanted to get a head start on my nervous break down this year, so although I have already cleaned the carpets, I imagine they will be cleaned again before her imminent arrival. And for those of you that are interested, here is my Super Secret Carpet Green Cleaning Elixir! I love this stuff and use it in the laundry as well.
As always when using a carpet cleaner do a spot check!! Test the cleaner on some obscure place, like in a carpeted hall closet to test the cleaner.
Green Cleaning Bathrooms & Kitchen
One of my absolute favorite homemade recipes is a Soft Scrub. Works like a charm! And if you’re wondering about the label, well I got bored one winter and invented a brand name for my homemade green cleaning products. I know, I’m seeing someone about my weird tendencies. But in the meantime, isn’t my label pretty!
I use my homemade dish soap, (find that recipe HERE) scented with Essential Oils of my choosing, but you can use any dish soap. You can add a couple of tablespoons of Borax or Oxygen Bleach for some extra cleaning Oooomph! But, if you’re using the Borax mix it well with the baking soda, then add enough dish soap to make a cake frosting like consistency and add the glycerin. The Glycerin is used to keep it from hardening in between uses.
Curtains, Throw Pillows & Throw Blankets
For an excellent all natural Laundry Soap, try Soap Nuts, (actually they are berries)! You simply throw 6 – 8 nuts in a bag and toss it in with the wash. And, you can reuse them for up to 6 washes, then compost them. Soap nuts are the greenest laundry soap I know of, even the paper bag they come in is compostable.
If you want to make and store a liquid soap nuts laundry soap, try this;
- Bring 4 cups of distilled water to a full boil.
- Remove from heat and toss in 7 soap nuts.
- Cover and steep overnight.
- Squeeze the nuts to get all the goodness.
- Place the liquid in a glass container and add your favorite Essential Oil scents.
- Store in the fridge, but because it resembles tea, label it well! (Yeah, there’s a story behind the last warning).
- Use 1/4 c. Per load.
Consequently, this liquid soap also has many uses. Use it like you would any other liquid soap to clean.
Finally, I will have a home that is Mama worthy and will smell fresh! In addition to these, you can find all my cleaning recipes on my Green Cleaning page. Got to go, I haven’t dusted the plumbing pipes yet!
