Trends Don’t Last Forever

January 12, 2017 4 Comments

Well, 2017 wasn’t even here before somebody somewhere decided that my stuff was passe. But, and here’s the kicker, someone else predicts that I’m a trendsetter.  I think I like them better.  Trends are funny, the predictions of what will trend and what won’t depends on who you talk to.

Trends Have A Purpose

These designers have their job, which is to compel you to totally redecorate your homes every year and happily spend a lot of money while doing it.   Mine is to encourage you to look at what you already have with fresh eyes.  To check out what’s trending for inspiration to make-over your stuff.  And although, I understand their goal is to sell me new stuff,  I still get a secret pleasure out of looking at what they predict will be big in the new year.  Some of it makes me laugh, some makes me want to cry and some…….makes me think someone needs to pay me big bucks to come up with these lists!

Wanna take a stroll through the predicted trends for 2017?  Come on!

Color, Color Everywhere

For walls it’s deep rich colors; Taupes, Blues, Grays and Greens.  Jewel tones are also expected to make a come back with your furniture choices.  Although I’m not a big fan of jewel tones, I have to admit that I really love these deep rich colors used on wooden furniture.

Hanging Out

What goes around, eventually comes back around.  That keeps coming to mind when I looked over the 2017 Home Trend Predictions.  Check out what’s new in wall decor; cork, black & white photos and vintage maps.  They’re a little late on the map thing if you ask me, I’ve been seeing them at all the Junk shows.

Making a comeback from the 80’s is Terra Cotta tile floors!  Not the shiny, slick, skate in your socks stuff, but the natural, textured kind.  This is something I would do in my kitchen if I could afford it.  AND….wait for it……cork flooring!

Natural fiber rugs like sisal, jute, bamboo and hemp are flashing forward again.  2017 is lining up to be the year of Earth Stuff.  BIG FAN!

Deja Vu All Over Again

As for accessories and appliances?  Well, black stainless steel is all a buzz, copper is making a big impact, and painted metal will be popular.  I’m going to have to throw a flag on the painted metal thing, for delayed play.  My junkin friends have been doing that one for years!

Lucite furniture is having it’s day in the sun again, and they are saying that upholstered headboards will be HUGE.  Again, I say they’re a little late to jump on the headboard thing.  These designers are obviously not hanging out in Junk Shows and Flea Markets in Oklahoma.   And between you and me, there’s no way I’ll ever sit in a Lucite chair, just imagine the view from the back……shudder!

I’m Still Trendy!

But the good news from the East & West Coast is I’m still trendy!  Thank Goodness, cause I was starting to get worried. Old chippy vintage junk will be popular in 2017 only they call it something cooler like upcycled home decor. While they predict that Shabby Chic and French Country has had it’s 5 minutes, Farmhouse, Mid-Century Modern and Industrial will continue to gather speed.

It’s fun to see what the experts predict, but I think I’ll just keep on keepin on with my chippy, rusty, silverplated junk with a touch of French flair that I call the Faded Bluebird style.  I’m happy to let their skinny butts go numb in those trendy lucite chairs while I veg out in my comfy overstuffed passe French Bergeres.

You should look over new trends, drool if you want to, but don’t change your entire home based on someone’s idea of what’s trendy.  Be your own trendsetter!  You decide what’s trending in your home this year! Is leopard print still in? How about beaded curtains, lace everywhere or outdoor wicker furniture in your living room.  Live with what inspires you and makes you happy and you will always be a home trend predicting expert in my mind.

What’s trending in your house this year?

Happy Decorating!

I’ve been drooling over the cork walls for my imaginary office. I’d love to be able to have a huge space to plan the plot of my novel. It wouldn’t be pretty, but very functional. I had to laugh at your lucite chair comment about the view from behind. Ha ha ha. I’ve never thought of that.

Yeah, I have a weird mind. Things like that always occur to me. I love the cork walls too!

Decorate with what speaks to you not what some says is on trend. Don’t follow trends, do what you like.
