Garlic Is A Vegetable!

· And other stuff you may not have known about Garlic ·

Did you know that Garlic isn’t considered an herb?  ME EITHER! This poor veggie is like a 6’8 tall teenager trying to convince everyone that he doesn’t want to play Basketball. Garlic is a distant cousin of leeks, chives and onions and it doesn’t prevent vampires from lurking in your neighborhood either, so that’s two garlic misconceptions busted.  Garlic is however a totally awesome veggie type thing! It’s proven to help your heart, prevent colds, reduce blood pressure & cholesterol, and some recent studies have linked garlic to bone health. PLUS garlic is really nutritious.  It contains; Manganese, B6, Fiber, Vitamin C, Selenium, calcium, potassium, phosphorus and iron.  It’s one of those mega foods my friends keep talking about, so I’m writing this post in it’s honor.

Pick Of The Litter

Garlic is cheap so buy it in bulk!  You want to pick the firmest bulbs you can find and if you see dark powdery looking stuff on the paper like skin….move on.

Store Garlic

I keep my garlic in a bowl in my pantry and they are very happy there because of the curb appeal!  As garlic gets older it shrinks (who doesn’t?) and that makes it easier to peel, so the fresher the bulb the harder to peel the cloves. But if it begins to sprout, you need to use immediately!  Just remove all the green when you chop it up.  You can eat the spouts if they are at least 6″ long, but any shorter than that and they are quite bitter. Feel like you are well-educated about garlic now?  Well, wait for it!

Did you know that there’s a quick and easy way to peel garlic? Just watch the video below and prepare to be amazed!

Other Cool Stuff To Do With Garlic

I use a lot of garlic.  I make my own sauces including spaghetti sauce and it just wouldn’t be as tasty without my Roasted Garlic Paste.  It’s so easy to make and I use it in so many dishes like; potato, pasta and rice side dishes. Oh, then there’s Mac & Cheese, roasted garlic dressing, Garlic Bread, Garlic Chicken……

And did you know that you can make your own quick mined garlic like store bought using dried minced garlic?  It’s easier and MUCH cheaper!  My local stores sells this stuff for $6 a jar!  I made this for pennies.

Minced Garlic

Who knew that I could spend so much time discussing Garlic?  Well, my friends and family for one.  And since they’ve stopped listening to me, you are the lucky recipient of my fountain of endless galic trivia.   You should be able to find lots of garlic in stores right now fairly cheap as August is usually when it is harvested, so what are you waiting for!!?!

Oh, last important thing about garlic.  Although it is really healthy for you, unless you only surround yourself with other fellow garlic lovers, you might want to invest in some really good mouthwash!  Just sayin.

Happy Cooking!
